Melanie Stryder is back in her own head, no other voices to bother her, except the ones there before Wanderer arrived. Jared Howe, and her little brother Jamie have trhe world back in the udnerground cave the human rebels hide out in. The self sacrificing altruistic soul Wanderer wanted to die. She hated being a parasite, even though the death meant hurting the one partner she had never thought she'd find. The human boy Ian O'Shea. Unfortunatly for her, as Mel put it, "humans are selfish" and Wanderer's friends refused to let her die and not be the thing she hated again. Now she has been reinserted into a Host's body, while arguably not a technical parasite since it seemed "Pet" (the soul prior to herself) had been in the bodies mind since birth.
Unfortunatly for her, since she would rather not be the thing she herself despised, a traitor to her own species and the enemy of her friend's, she is not being allowed to leave again. Now not only are tehre still some who resent her prescence in the caves making life difficult but the three new human groups discovered nearby could prove to be a death wish for the soul trapped by her love for her humans. While the other humans also have a soul who seems to not care for being a soul any longer, life is still precariously dangerous for Wanderer. How long can these new humans trust either "alien enemy"? How long can the cave rebels trust these new humans?
Mel and Wanderer are still working to bring in soul's and remove them from the human bodies, to be shipped off to another planet to live in peace. While the cave dwellers seem to have accepted this new arrangment for the treatment of their once enemies, there are still debates over whether or not this is a good idea. The Seekers have started noticing the disappearances, leaving all of the humans at risk, and now new rumors have come up. Rumors of a facility housing humans that were captured but never put under for insertion or discarding. It will be up to the humans left to make choices, save the rumored humans being studied in the facility, continue sneaking in souls and removing them from human bodies, or flee from it all and restart in a new colony.
Can the love and trust Wanderer has earned be enough to keep her human love(s) from being killed in foolish rescue attempts? Especially as family members are the ones left in the balance....siblings and friends of the humans closest to Wanderer could be the death or salvation to them all.
